UPDATE: THE GEEKIVERSE RANKS THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE FILMS

Every film from Phase 1 and Phase 2 were included, so unfortunately that means no Spider-man (yet!). Phase 3 is underway. This article made for some hotly contested debating and while Josiah & Lou might have wounds too deep to overcome, both lists’ top 3 contained the same films. Without further adieu, here they are:

ANT-MAN
Official Review

antman

Ant-man not only rapped up Phase 2 of the MCU, it was a pleasant surprise that Ant-man could transition to the silver screen in a big way. The ever-charming Paul Rudd crawled into our collective heart and made us anticipate Civil War that much more.

THE AVENGERS

the avengers

2012’s The Avengers brought together a cast of superheroes never before seen in one film. The unprecedented all-star cast took the Marvel Cinematic Universe to new levels, bringing superheroes to the main stream and introducing the universe to thousands of new fans.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
Official Review

Age of Ultron

The massively anticipated sequel to The Avengers broke all kinds of box office records and delivered big time. Introducing us to many new faces on both sides, Age of Ultron is a success on almost every front.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
Official Review

captain america first avenger

Captain America’s first foray onto the big screen made for a likable hero that many felt they related to. If the Avengers didn’t crack the barrier to the main stream, it was The First Avenger that helped to break the series through.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER
Official Review

captain america winter soldier

Arguably the best entry in the universe, The Winter Soldier blew audiences away and shattered expectations. Tying in S.H.I.E.L.D. and the events of The Avengers in a superb manner, the film kept the franchise’s momentum flying forward at a blazing pace.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

DOCTOR STRANGE
Official Review

Doctor Strange enters the MCU with an origin based story featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character. Magic is the focus for the first time in the series and we find yet another Infinity Stone, bringing us one step closer to The Avengers: Infinity War.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Official Review

The Surprise hit of 2014 (Geekiverse’s Movie of the Year), Guardians once more set the bar higher for Marvel films. The ensemble is arguably more lovable than The Avengers, reminding many film goers of the first time they saw Star Wars. Its sequel is quite possibly the most anticipated of any of Marvel’s upcoming films.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

MCDINHU EC040

The Incredible Hulk was the second movie of Phase One, therefore being the first to intertwine the films. While it reviewed better than its predecessor just a few years earlier, this is the canon story. Though we lost Edward Norton (The Hulk), we gained an even better one in Mark Ruffalo.

IRON MAN

Robert Downey Jr.’s impressive career comeback started with Iron Man. Downey, along with an impressive supporting cast of actors, helped to make for an exciting start to the Cinematic Universe.

IRON MAN 2

The anticipated sequel to Iron Man introduced Don Cheadle to the series and brought in characters such as Black Widow that would have a big impact on other films in the universe.

IRON MAN 3

iron man 3

Nearly one year after the commercial success that was The Avengers, Iron Man 3 was the next film released in the series since and the first film of Phase Two. Highly influenced by the events in Avengers in NYC, the Holiday sub-theme helped the series to feel fresh and had a shocking twist on the infamous villain, The Mandarin.

Lou’s Rank: 12

THOR

thor

Featuring film legend Anthony Hopkins, Star Wars Alumni Natalie Portman, and Marvel’s most popular villain in Loki, Thor laid the groundwork to what became a big part of The Avengers’ plot.

Lou’s Rank: 9

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

the dark world

The Dark World featured a solid story while reestablishing Thor as a general badass. The post-Avengers story continues here as Marvel plays to its strengths. After all, isn’t everyone up all night to get Loki?

  1. Hmmm. I think my list goes a little like this.

    10. Incredible Hulk
    9. Thor Dark World
    8. Iron Man 3
    7. Thor
    6. Captain America First Avenger
    5. Iron Man 2
    4. Iron Man
    3. Guardians of the Galaxy
    2. The Avengers
    1. Captain America Winter Soldier

If I could add in all the films about Marvel characters,

X2, X First Class, X Days of Future Past and Spiderman 1 or 2 might sneak into the Top 10

    1. And mine would be
      10. Incredible Hulk
9-6. The Thor movies and Iron Man sequels (It’s impossible for me to permanently rank them)
      5. Iron Man
      4. The First Avenger
      3. The Avengers
2 and 1: Guardians of the Galaxy and The Winter Soldier (I think that TWS is objectively speaking the better movie, but GotG is more fun and the movie I would watch more often).
