Before Frank Miller became a divisive figure in the comic book community, he created what was considered the defining run of Daredevil (see our Daredevil suggested reading for details on that) and during this time he created the assassin Elektra Natchios. She was a beautiful figure from Matt Murdock’s past, a bounty hunter and assassin, and quite possibly the greatest love of Daredevil’s life.

On Friday morning I woke up early, so I could watch the first few episodes of Daredevil before work. I had finished rewatching the first season the night before so I was all caught up and anxiously awaited the return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil, the debuts of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, and Elodie Yung arriving as Elektra. I worried a little about whether or not season two could live up to season one, and now I feel foolish to have ever questioned it.

Daredevil was a surprise hit last year. It has been speculated that a second season was never planned, and the initial outline of Marvel and Netflix’s deal, while not ruling it out, seemed to account for only four series before the team-up of The Defenders. But despite these things, the well written characters, compelling plot, and brutal fight scenes earned a second season when the show was met with widespread critical praise. The question now is, can the show achieve the same level of quality without the element of surprise?
