It looks like Star Wars Celebration is already off to an epic start. It was announced today that Disney and Lucasfilm are producing a new series of stories, action figures, books, and merchandise focusing on the ladies of the Star Wars universe.

Starting this July, the 2-3 minute shorts will follow the adventures of beloved characters like Jyn, Leia, and Rey, Sabine from Rebels, and even Ahsoka from The Clone WarsEach episode will be released on Disney Youtube before a two-part TV special that will air in Fall 2017. Each new adventure is officially canon and it turns out that we’ll be hearing a lot of familiar voices including Daisy Ridley (Rey), Felicity Jones (Jyn), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), and even Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata).

Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, said, “Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity.”

Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 1-5

As a girl growing up as a Star Wars fan, I searched for a role model in that universe. And, while Leia became that role model for me, she became that by default, being the only female character of any consequence in the Star Wars universe at the time. But over the last 40 years, Star Wars has introduced us to a number of female role models for both young boys and girls to look up to and admire. The feminine Padmé. The introverted Rey. The daring and fearless Jyn. The confident Ahsoka. It seems that today there is a role model for every kind of girl out there watching Star Wars, and for the first time ever, those ladies will be the center of their very own adventures.
