Toby Emmerich, President and CCO of Warner Brothers, has confirmed that Oscar nominated, delightful British tea pastry, Jude Law has officially signed on to play young Albus Dumbledore in the next Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, and Potterheads (myself included) are ELATED.
This film will take us to a time long before Dumbledore was headmaster of Hogwarts when he was a young Transfiguration professor during a particularly dark time in the wizarding world, though decades before Voldemort first came to power. He was a professor at the time that Newt Scamander (the protagonist in these prequels) was expelled from Hogwarts, and he fought against Newt’s expulsion, much like he fought against Hagrid’s expulsion.
Jude Law has been a stand out actor for years now, both in the UK and the United States, first coming to prominence in the 1997 Oscar Wilde biopic Wilde, in which he played poet Lord Alfred Douglas. Other notable performances include The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) with Voldemort himself, Ralph Fiennes, and Sherlock Holmes (2009/2010), etc., as well as an extensive Broadway and West End career. He was most recently seen in the HBO limited series The Young Pope.
Needless to say, Law has an impressive resume and most certainly has the chops to satisfy any true Potterhead as the young Dumbledore. It will be interesting to see how he portrays Dumbledore going through a very odd, difficult, and dark time in his life, long before he meets Harry Potter. Law is widely regarded as one of the most versatile actors in the business, as well as one of the busiest (at 44 he has 40 plus films under his belt). I have no doubt that he will be able to successfully tap into the darker corners of Dumbledore’s mind.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 is slated to be released on November 18th, 2018. Be sure to stay tuned to The Geekiverse for more information as it is released.
