It was just announced on April 9th, that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will officially be producing and starring in the upcoming live action film adaption of one of Disney’s most beloved rides.
Johnson has been hinting that a Jungle Cruise film was in the works since 2015, but now with Moana complete, he is officially announcing his newest project.
The film will be based on one of Disneyland’s original rides where Guests ride through the great rivers of the world found in Africa, Asia, and South America with the always exciting “backside of water.” It’s kistchy and pun-tastic and a must see for anyone visiting any of the Disney Parks. The original attraction opened in 1955 and hasn’t changed much… but we can be sure that Johnson will breathe new life into the Jungle Cruise and make it exciting and hilarious at the same time.
Disney has had some hits and misses with their live action remakes of their beloved park attractions. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has seen almost 15 years of success and has grossed almost $4 billion with a fifth film coming out next month. Haunted Mansion on the other hand was a bit of a disappointment where the creepy Gothic feel was replaced with Eddie Murphy and received negative reviews from critics and fans alike.
Let’s hope that Johnson finds a hit with The Jungle Cruise that keeps with the nostalgia of the original attraction while updating it for newcomers.
