John Wick: Chapter 2 Review

Keanu Reeves reprises his role as the legendary assassin-turned-retiree John Wick. What’s in store for John after the events from the previous movie?

To start off, when I watched the first John Wick, I was instantly sold. I love run-and-gun action movies like the Expendables or the Bourne franchises, but there was something special about this movie. The atmosphere of the movie and the way in which it was filmed really hooked me. Plus the character of John Wick was so calm and cool, but then turned around to be such a badass when provoked.

Chapter 2 gives the exact same feeling of the first in terms of both the plot and in the way the movie was shot, with a few twists and turns throughout the movie. Even though some of the plot points are the same as the original, I think the plot twists steer Chapter 2 in a different direction and I can’t wait to see the third movie. I really hope they don’t drag this series out too long because too many great films are ruined by their not-so-great franchise additions.

With Chapter 2, you still have a super cool and bad to the bone main character, but they reveal more about his tragic backstory and you find out more about is history. I just want to say that I love Keanu Reeves. From Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures, to my personal favorite Point Break, to The Matrix trilogy, even to some of his less popular roles like the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. His style of acting has really grown on me, whether it be serious, goofy, or some awesome mix of the two.

Not only is Keanu great, but many of the supporting characters are also awesome. I found myself constantly rooting against the villains, and I was excited any time a returning character was on screen. Riccardo Scamarcio’s villain character was ok, but I didn’t really think he was the strongest character he could have been. I feel like Laurence Fishburne (of the Matrix trilogy fame) could have had a bit more screen time seeing as he is such a great actor and plays a pivotal role in the plot. Also, Ruby Rose’s character could have also been developed a bit more, especially because her concept was so cool. Rapper and actor Common was fantastic and fit right into the action-packed John Wick universe. Plus, THAT DOG WAS ADORABLE!

I think the best part of this movie was the action sequences. Whether it was the car chases (that ’69 Mustang had me drooling), or the shootouts, or the hand to hand combat, all of the action was perfection. I have loved seeing Keanu train for these fights and gun fights on social media, and seeing them in action on the big screen really makes him look like a super hero. There was definitely a step up in action from the first John Wick to Chapter 2, but it wasn’t super over the top with explosions and gore.

You know what a badass like John Wick shouldn’t have? This merchandise right here.

Overall, I think this movie is great, especially if you’re like me and just can’t resist a good action movie. The action itself was the obvious forefront, with Keanu Reeves shining brightly as per usual, and the supporting cast also finishing out with quality. If you haven’t see the John Wick movies yet, they are a definite must see. I can not wait to see what they do next in the series!

Final Score

+ Keanu Reeves kills it as John Wick again

+ The action sequences were fun and not overly flashy

+ John’s Mustang is one of my dream cars

+ Common played his role very well

+/- Laurence Fishburne was great, but should have had a larger role

– Main villain was a little mediocre

– Ruby Rose’s character was under developed

Author Trevor White would want to be John Wick, but only with the house, the dog, and the car. He is also a huge fan of Star Wars and pizza.
