Star Wars Rebels: Imperial Super Commandos Review – Mandalorian Warfare

**Minor Spoilers

This week’s episode of Star Wars: Rebels continues to serve its stellar reputation as one of the best animated shows on television. There wasn’t anything groundbreaking in terms of story or reveals, but the self-contained action was worth the watch alone.

Ezra and Sabine are tasked with teaming up yet again, shortly after Sabine plays a cool looking game of space chess (no, it’s not Sabbacc). Heading to Mandalore, a favorite reoccurring theme of both Rebels and The Clone Wars series, we see the return of Fenn Rau, a character first seen in season 2.

One of the highlights of the episode is certainly seeing the “flying Storm Troopers,” who are really Mandalorians who have pledged themselves to the Empire and its cause. Visually, these Imperial Commandos are a sight to see thanks to their influence of Ralph McQuarrie’s original design concept for Boba Fett (Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens includes this conceptual Boba as a playable character).

Rebels continues to do a nice job of reintroducing and canonizing Expanded Universe characters. This time, Gar Saxon has made the cut, with a slightly different appearance from what we saw in the comics, notably Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir. Long time Star Wars fans appreciate nods such as this.

My favorite, jaw-dropping moment was when Sabine steals a jet pack and flies with Ezra through a tight-quartered canyon, pursued heavily by the Commandos. It’s something we haven’t seen before in anything Star Wars. While flying and weaving through, a relentless firefight breaks out and Ezra is forced to deflect shots with his Lightsaber. Totally unique and totally cool.

Lastly, I have really enjoyed Sabine Wren’s high amount of screen time this season. She has broken away from the pack a bit and become a main protagonist alongside Ezra. How’s that for another strong Star Wars female lead? She’s an attractive character in the fact that she embodies what a member of the Rebel Alliance is – rebellious in nature, good in a fight, and uncompromising in her mission to defeat the Empire.

Rebels keeps on rolling. This is one of the more useful Mandalorian experiences we have had in recent times in the Star Wars saga.

+ Sabine is a main attraction.

+ Canyon shootout.

+ Usage of Gar Saxon in new Star Wars canon.
