Dumb Idea Show Lands Big Star

When word came down that NBC had ordered a run of a “The Office” style comedy set in the DC Universe, I thought to myself. “Wow, that’s a really dumb idea”, but that is what I had come to expect out of NBC in recent  years. The bottom of the idea barrel is being scraped………..again.

A quick recap of the concept – “Powerless” is a workplace comedy that takes place in an insurance company that has to process claims after superheroes break…..well…..cities.  When I say it that way, it doesn’t sound as bad. It’s the “The Office” part that doesn’t do much for me.

Truthfully, I was pretty sure that it wasn’t going to get off the ground. It sounds as good as a reboot of “Coach”….oh wait.

Well, looks like it is going to fly, as Variety is just one source that announced yesterday that Vanessa Hudgens of “High School Musical” fame will play a lead role in the series. Hudgens, who just killed it in Fox’s “Grease” Live event, will play Emily Locke “… an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people. The character likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done, and she finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various superheroes that proliferate in her city.”

With all the different DC projects in the works, it is hard to imagine working more superheroes into the mix. In mid-January, Eric Goldman of IGN asked some NBC execs about whether they would be mentioning  or featuring the big named superheroes, and Jennifer  Salke of NBC responded,

“Oh yeah, they’ve namedropped everyone. I don’t think they’ve said anyone’s off limits.”

No supers are off limits and Vanessa Hudgens? “Powerless” just stepped a bit higher up the “it might be interesting” list.

What do you think? Does “Powerless” sound like a winner or not? Leave me a comment below. I promise I won’t get grumpy. OK, maybe not.
