Rock Band Comes Out Of Retirement – Harmonix Announces Rock Band 4

The rumors are true!

After months of speculation due to reports from various media outlets, Harmonix announced today that the Rock Band franchise is coming out of retirement. Rock Band 4 is slated to come out this fall on new generation systems Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

From the official Harmonix blog:

For years you have been asking us the same question: “When will Rock Band return?” For years you have been unified in solidarity with one single demand: “Give us a new Rock Band!” Well, today, my friends, is your day.”

I could not be more thrilled! I was a massive fan of the music genre, right from Guitar Hero 2. 2015 is going to be a big year for my favorite franchises, with Rock Band and Star Wars: Battlefront making comebacks, in addition to one of gaming’s most anticipated games in Batman: Arkham Knight.

It’s to be determined if the Xbox 360/PS3 era instruments you already own will be compatible. What we do know is quite exciting: the music collection you already own will be downloadable for no extra charge. I have hundreds of songs purchased from one of many, many Rock Band parties I had back in the day. The songs must be within the same ecosystem however (ie if you had an Xbox 360, you can only redownload on the Xbox One).

That would mean any songs you have from purchased DLC, Green Day Rock Band, or Lego Rock Band. I would imagine that The Beatles’ iteration will not be included, as the licenses to those tracks have never left the original disc and therefore been non-transferable.

Also from the blog:

“With Rock Band 4, we’re doubling down on the energy and excitement of playing music live with your friends,” says Harmonix Chief Executive Officer Steve Janiak. “Focusing on the core experience that our fans have told us they love allows us to evolve established gameplay in meaningful ways that we can’t wait to share with everyone later this year.”

We will find out more details this May. Could you imagine if Kinect is integrated?! I can see it now: bonus points for stage presence.
